【1998 Archives】

If you're an avid reader of ye olde internet998 Archives you may have noticed a recent uptick in stories about Netflix's Lovesick(formerly titled Scrotal Recall). The show's third season released Jan. 1, but its spike in popularity isn't just due to a timely premiere – it's because Lovesick is a genuinely warm story of human connection, with more sympathy for millennials than most shows accumulate over years.

You can read plenty of essays about Lovesick's excellence (including our own take), but if you prefer a quick list, let us lure you in by way of that.

How do we love Lovesick? Let us count the ways.

1. Quiet moments of existential dread

It takes a special knack to jump between rom-com jokes and moments of true emotional gravitas, and Lovesickis well-possessed of that skill. Somewhere between sex jokes you'll stumble upon an arresting nugget like, "What if all we're doing is just walking a constant tightrope between bliss and disaster?" Woof.

2. Luke reenacting Point Break

What is Luke in this scene but all of us when we find out a dear friend hasn't watched a formative film that means the world to us? With no time to spare, Luke launches into a full reenactment. It's fantastic on its own, but then we see that Dylan's become truly invested in the story. They each shed a single, solitary tear in response.

3. That epic karaoke scene

Season 3 opens strong and gives us a delightful romp with the gang day-drinking at karaoke. Is there any song as fun to belt as Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart?" Don't answer, you'll offend us.

4. Luke and Evie's sweet friendship

Lovesickexamines the formative impact of many permutations of romance, but much of its success is due to grounding the show in friendship. Luke and Evie have a truly tender and entirely platonic connection which means they're always there for each other, through thick and thin.

5. Anything Angus does

Angus gets bumped to series regular between Seasons 1 and 2, and it's clear why. Joshua McGuire's comedic timing is consistently fantastic; even once you're used to the eclectic character you can't anticipate the hearty laughs he elicits. He's also a pro at reaction shots to the point where you'll want to watch him in every scene.

6. The love of rosé

On the surface, rosé is but a slightly sweet white wine, but the characters on Lovesickknow that it is a powerful unifier – and also delicious! There is no shame in switching to white wine at a whiskey tasting or starting with it on a lads' night out that gets crazy. We must all live our truth, sweet as it is.

7. Diversity 4eva

Dylan falls in love a lot, and Lovesickdoesn't try to kid us that all his romantic history was mysteriously absent of melanin (like, say...well, a lot of shows we could name). There's no fuss made over the women of color that this show makes plenty of room for, and we're not handing out any medals – but we are nodding in approval, and perhaps raising a glass of rosé.

Lovesickis now streaming on Netflix.
