A representative for Thiel did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Thiel is competing with other bidders to acquire Gawker domain names and nearly 200,000 archived articles, according to Reuters. Don't worry, other Gawker assets, like Deadspin and Jezebel, were already sold to Univision Holdings Inc. back in 2016.
Thiel hasn't said what he'll do with the assets. Maybe he'll take them off the internet, or scowl at them in his vampire lair while wearing Ayn Rand pajamas.
It should be noted that Thiel is currently on the board of Facebook, a company with an absurd amount of influence over what media the world consumes. So, overall, not a great day for the press.

There's no guarantee he'll win the bid or be able to clear the legal challenges involved, so there's still hope that Thiel goes home empty-handed.
